Women's soccer ends 2014 campaign on winning note

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team finished the 2014 campaign on a winning note on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Holy Names at T-Bird Stadium.

Freshman Mariah Meza scored her fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute to give the Penguins an early 1-0 lead. Senior Jessica Ramirez played a through ball over the top to Meza, who finished in the top left corner of the net.

Redshirt freshman Ashley Lentz played the first 45 minutes in goal and put up a clean sheet. True freshman Sylvanna Islas played the final 45 minutes and allowed a goal in the final seconds of the match when Dominican pushed forward in an attempt to put its seniors in scoring position. Courtney Okazaki played a ball to the corner to Pamela Ramos, who beat Islas in front of the net.

Senior Megan Hanson netted the game-winning goal, her third goal of the season, in the 68th minute. Freshman Lina Miller settled a ball that pinballed around the box and found Hanson, who scored on Tiana Miyashiro.

The Penguins finished the 2014 campaign with a 4-13-1 overall record but came on strong at the end of the season with a 4-7-1 record in PacWest Conference play.  The Penguins' strong finish put them in eighth place out of 13 teams in the PacWest, one place better than the team's 2013 finish. Dominican was the strongest team in the Bay Area pod, posting better conference marks than Notre Dame de Namur, Academy of Art, and Holy Names, as well as Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii. The Penguins were led by senior Mckenna Kimball's five goals despite her missing the final five matches of the season after suffering a season-ending knee injury at California Baptist on Oct. 18.
