CHICO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team dropped a 63-58 decision to San Francisco State on Saturday night in the 55th Annual Mac Martin Invitational hosted by Chico State.
Last season, when the Penguins fell to the Gators in Chico, Dominican was without
Dominique Taplin due to injury. On Saturday, Taplin was in the starting lineup and did what he could but unfortunately for Dominican the result was the same. Taplin led Dominican with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting with three three-pointers.
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten added 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Matt Hayes scored nine points and dished out eight assists. After the tournament, Hayes was named to the five-player All-Tournament Team.
After coming out of the 10-minute media timeout tied 20-20, San Francisco State took control of the game by scoring the next nine points. Dominican never overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and trailed by as much as 15 before cutting the lead to three with under three minutes to go. Taplin's layup at 2:49 cut the lead to 55-52 but the Penguins fouled at the other end to put the Gators back up by five. Another set of free throws stretched the deficit to seven and Dominican never got closer than five points again.
Both Bren Haley and Udun Osakue each tallied five field goals apiece for the Gators. Haley finished with 15 points and Osakue added a dozen.
Dominican returns home for a women-men's doubleheader on Thursday, Sept. 4 when the Penguins host Notre Dame de Namur. The men will follow the women's game with tipoff for the men slated at 7:30 p.m. Live video and stats coverage will be available at
