Penguins downed on road by Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team fell 74-62 on Wednesday night to Cal State Monterey Bay.

Guards Dominique Taplin and Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten both poured in 15 points apiece. Mathew Lipski and Josh Ramirez each added 12 points as the Penguins dominated the paint 46-30 and outrebounded CSUMB 37-31. Taplin, Schwartz-Edminsten, Ramirez, and Matt Hayes all had five rebounds each. However, the Penguins' 18 turnovers led to 23 CSUMB points. Furthermore, after shooting 53.3 percent in the first half, Dominican went just 34.3 percent in the second half. Dominican struggled from the perimeter, where the Penguins went just 4-of-24 from behind the three-point line.

Evan Zeller's game-high 19 points for the Otters matched a career high. Mateo Jones came off the bench to add a career-high 14 points.

Despite the final margin, the game wasn't decided until the final two minutes of regulation. Four minutes into the game, Dominican took a seven-point lead. However, the Otters took a seven-point lead themselves and led 38-35 at intermission.

CSUMB opened the second half on a 16-2 run to give them a 15-point lead. The Penguins countered over the next eight minutes with a 19-2 run of their own and took a 58-56 lead with under eight minutes to go. The Otters answered with a 9-0 run and Dominican never came closer than two possessions of the lead the rest of the way.

The Penguins, who have gone 1-2 against CCAA competition thus far, will face GNAC member Simon Fraser on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tipoff against the NCAA's only Canadian-based member is slated for 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live with audio commentary provided by radio.dominican.edu.
