SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — A trio of Dominican University of California women's basketball players reached double digits but the Penguins fell 90-73 to visiting Cal State East Bay on Tuesday evening.
Sophomore
Carly Holboke matched two career-highs with 20 points and four made three-pointers, and
Sarah Nelson and Alyssa Weatherd each added 16 points. However, that wasn't enough to stop a career-high 35 points for Stephanie Lopez and 94 percent free throw shooting by the Pioneers.
Seven minutes into Tuesday's game, Dominican trailed by nine points after one of Lopez's three three-pointers. Holboke answered with back-to-back threes and a
Sarah Nelson jumper cut the CSUEB lead to one.
Jessy Marshall's basket gave Dominican a 23-22 lead a quarter of way through play. A back-end free throw by
Danielle Yamauchi capped the 11-point run and put the Penguins in front by two, 23-22. However, the Pioneers regained the lead by halftime, 45-41.
Dominican shot 42.9 percent in the first half but cooled down in the second half. The Penguins took eight more field goal attempts than the Pioneers in the second half but the true difference came at the free throw line. The Pioneers went to the line 33 times and converted an astounding 31 of those while Dominican attempted only 21 the entire night. Dominican had 13 offensive rebounds and recorded two less turnovers than CSUEB.
"There was improvement tonight. We're seeing that every day individually and team-wise," said Head Coach
Tim LaKose. "We need to be more consistent and good things will happen."
Tori Breshers added 18 points and Remy Puou added 16 points for CSUEB. For Dominican, Nelson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Jessy Marshall added nine points and
Lauren Hyatt added five points and four rebounds in her first outing of the season.
