SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team finished the 2014 season on a positive note with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 16-25, 25-22) victory over Academy of Art University during Senior Night in the Conlan Center.
With President Marcy looking on, Dominican rattled off the first five points of the match and led set one wire-to-wire. Sophomore
Susanna Pilkerton, who finished with a team-high 14 kills on .500 hitting, was a perfect 7-for-7 attacking in the set.
Dominican scored the first two points of the second set only to fall behind 6-2. The Penguins caught back up at 11-11 amidst a three-point swing that put Dominican back in front, 12-11. ART U jumped back ahead forcing Dominican Head Coach
Gayle Stammer to call timeout. Dominican went on to score six of the next nine points and a
Madison Marshall kill punctuated the set. ART U used an 11-2 run in set three to force a fourth set.
Up 19-13 in set four, things got tight for the Penguins when the Urban Knights cut the lead to one. ART U committed a pair of errors to give Dominican some breathing room and they took advantage with a pair of kills. Marshall had the last point of the fourth set as well with a block.
Senior
Samantha Rains, who entered play fourth in Division II blocks per set, added five more to her season total, as well as 11 kills. Her name is sprinkled throughout the record book. Having played 106 matches and 375 sets in her four years — by far the most of any Dominican player in the Division II era — Rains is the career leader in block solos, block assists, total blocks, and blocks per set. She ranks second in total points, third in kills and attack attempts, seventh in service attempts, eighth in serve percentage, and tenth in attack percentage.
Melissa Brum led all players with 19 kills for the Urban Knights.
Hannah Smith dished out 45 assists. That gives her 850 in a season and 8.67 assists per set, which are both second-most for a Dominican player in a season in the Division II era.
Freshmen
Aimee Steinwand and
Shannon RiggioKerley added nine and eight kills, respectvely. Four Penguins reached double digits in digs:
Amanda Lee (19), Riggio-Kerley (16),
Madeline Powelson (14), and Smith (13).
After her two seasons at Dominican, senior
Megan Callen ranks second in attack percentage and blocks per set; third in block solos, block assists, and total blocks; tenth in kills per set, total points, and points per set. Callen's season was cut short by a knee injury. However, she was in the starting lineup one final time on Thursday and was given a warm round of applause when subbed out before play began.
The Penguins had an uphill battle from before the season began when All-PacWest selection
Amanda Wasko went down with a knee injury. Injuries to Lee, Callen, and
Sari Kwan also kept the Penguins from competing at full strength. Dominican completes the season at 7-21 overall and in 11th place at 5-15 in PacWest play.
