Penguins score twice in draw at Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw at Dixie State on Thursday in Pacific West Conference action.

The Penguins played from behind after allowing Dixie State the first goal. The Red Storm scored on Ethan Vandenbosch's shot from 10 yards out to the left post. The ball went past Dominican goalkeeper Erik Anderson after Santiago Alejandro's shot was blocked and deflected to Bryan Baugh, who played the ball to Vandebosch.

Fabian Valdez-Mendoza had a shot in the final minute of the first half but his shot went wide and the Penguins trailed 1-0 at intermission. Sophomore Lee LeVerrier evened the game in the 65th minute. He played a ball off the cross from Chris Sennes and fired a shot from 10 yards out to the left post. Less than a minute later, senior Kolby Mitnick put the Penguins ahead when he tapped in a loose ball in front of the net.

The Penguins lost the lead in the 80th minute when Vandenbosch, who subbed back in seconds before, assisted Alejandro. The game remained tied the final thirty minutes, including both overtime periods, despite Dixie State taking a man-up advantage after the Penguins were issued a red card at the end of regulation. The Penguins were also charged with seven yellow cards, compared to none for Dixie State.

That advantage helped the Red Storm take six shots in overtime but none of them were on frame. Senior Vini Enriquez had a scoring opportunity in the 104th minute but his header was saved.

Anderson was credited with seven saves, matching a season-high. Anderson, along with the defense, worked nonstop on the narrow field and fended off over 30 long throws into the box.

Dominican now heads to Southern California to face Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. for the Penguins' second to last match of the season. Dominican wraps up the season on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. against Holy Names in Oakland.
