SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team failed to score early and those frustrations forced the team to play a player down for over a half in a 5-0 loss to Hawai'i Pacific University on Thursday.
Dominican fell behind early on Erika Ellis' goal in the 36th minute. Then in the 42nd minute, a foul in the box set up a free kick. The resulting play was a red card on freshman
Lina Miller. That set up the penalty kick, which Ashlyn Ubongen scored easily on to put HPU up 2-0. Forced to play a player down, things unraveled from there for the Penguins. Ellis scored again in the 43rd minute and Meghan Cooley added a goal of her own in the 44th minute on a ball that starting Dominican goalkeeper
Sylvanna Islas tried unsuccessfully to punch out. That sent the Penguins into halftime trailing 4-0.
Ellis added her third goal of the day in the 53rd minute on a beautifully-bent goal into the upper left of the net on a left-footed shot from the right side past goalkeeper
Ashley Lentz.
The Penguins, who looked to have the advantage early on, were penalized for their aggressive style. Dominican was charged with 23 fouls and three cards, including Miller's red card.
Senior
Sara Pimentel took four shots for Dominican and placed two on goal.
Kendra Corsberg and
Yvette Lozano each tallied one shot.
Dominican will host its Senior Day with a pregame ceremony honoring the team's seven seniors on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. That is the second match of a men's-women's doubleheader. Live stats and video will be available at
