BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team, winners of their last two home matches, found a way to win on the road with a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday.
Another balanced attack helped the Penguins earn their third conference victory in the last five matches. A 6-2 run in set one put the Penguins ahead 10-7. From there, a 7-2 run put Dominican in the driver's seat with the easy 25-16 set one victory. Despite staking a 9-6 lead in set two, the Penguins only scored seven more points and allowed committed seven errors that led to a 9-1 NDNU run and a tied match. In set three, the Penguins went up early, 5-3, and despite NDNU tying the match at 10-10, never trailed the rest of the set. Dominican took advantage of four NDNU errors late and took the lead back, 2-1, with the 25-19 victory in set three.
Dominican looked to have things wrapped up in set four at 18-6 but four Penguin errors helped the Argonauts climb back into the game. NDNU eventually tied the match at 22-22 and even took a 23-22 lead. The two teams traded points and held set/match point. The Penguins finally got the job done on a pair of
Aimee Steinwand kills.
For the first time since a five-set win over UH Hilo on Oct. 6, the Penguins had more than two players record 10 or more kills. In fact, it was the firs time all season that four Penguins reached the mark. Steinwand led the charge with 15 kills, followed by 11 apiece from
Shannon RiggioKerley and
Susanna Pilkerton. It was also a career night at the net for Riggio-Kerley and Pilkerton, who both had a career-high five block assists and helped the Penguins outblock NDNU 7-6. Riggio-Kerley added a career-high 17 digs.
Madeline Powelson had a match-high 21 digs and libero
Amanda Lee had 12.
Hannah Smith doled out 47 assists, her second-highest mark of the season.
The PacWest Conference victory was the first road win of the season for the Penguins, who remain in front of NDNU and Holy Names, and are one win behind Academy of Art, Chaminade, and UH Hilo, in the conference standings. Dominican could make up ground on their PacWest opponents with a three-match trip to Hawai'i, where they'll face UH Hilo, Hawai'i Pacific, and Chaminade from Oct. 24-26.
