Win streak comes to end at unblemished Azusa Pacific

Lauren Hyatt scored a team-high 10 points but the Penguins' two-game win streak came to an end on Tuesday at Azusa Pacific.
Box Score AZUSA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team saw its two-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday evening in an 80-59 loss at Azusa Pacific University.

While the Penguins (2-13/2-7 PacWest) played even most of the second half, they dug a substantial hole in the first half.

Second-place Azusa Pacific (9-4/7-0 PacWest) had a 19-9 lead midway through the first half and grew the lead to 20 just five minutes later. That lead grew to 24 before the Penguins finished the half on a 6-2 run to cut the halftime margin to 43-23. Azusa Pacific took advantage of Dominican's 10 first-half turnovers, converting those mishaps into 13 points.

The Cougars started the second half by nailing a three-pointer. That was the theme of the night as the Cougars buried a season-high 12 three-pointers and shot 46.9 percent from the field. Dominican cut the lead to 14 after a Noelle Roldan three-pointer and Sarah Nelson jumper, though the lead would expand back to as large as 27. The Penguins finished the second half strong with a 9-2 run but it was too little, too late as the Penguins could never overcome their first-half woes.

Dominican, with starter Jasmine Cox sidelined due to injury, spread the production across 10 different players in the lineup, though only Lauren Hyatt reached double digits with 10 points. Roldan added nine points and Carly Holboke and Jessy Marshall had eight points apiece. Nelson's seven rebounds were a team-high. Danielle Yamauchi dished out seven assists.

Sendy Valles led all players with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-9 from deep. The forward also added six assists and four steals for the Cougars.

Dominican returns home to the Conlan Center for the first time in 2014 on Saturday, Jan. 18. Tipoff of the PacWest doubleheader versus Hawai'i Pacific University (9-4/5-2 PacWest) is slated for 5:30 p.m. Live coverage will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
