Volleyball comes up just short in pair of five-set losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEASIDE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team was dealt a pair of tough five-set losses to finish out the Otter Classic on Saturday.

Dominican (1-3) saw a 2-0 lead slip away in an eventual loss (26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 20-25, 11-25) to San Francisco State (2-1) in the first match of the day.

The Penguins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but a 7-1 run put the Gators ahead, 13-10. A four-point Dominican run was matched by San Francisco State but the Penguins again countered with four straight points, followed by five straight points to rally back from San Francisco State having set point to Dominican taking the first set.

The Penguins came out swinging in set two. Six different players recorded a kill, with Megan Callen, Hannah Stocking-Siagkris, and Amanda Wasko all putting down four kills in the set.

The Gators got hot in the third set and jumped out to a 17-5 lead. Dominican couldn't get closer than six points and San Francisco State remained hot from that point. Dominican rebounded from a 4-1 deficit in set four with six straight points, then went cold again during an 8-1 Gators run. San Francisco State took advantage of Dominican errors in the deciding set, including two begin the set and four of the last five points to finish out the match.

Wasko led Dominican with 16 digs, followed by 13 from Megan Calle and 11 from Stocking-Siagkris.

Nearly 12 hours later in the tournament's third-place match, Dominican fell behind 2-1 but forced a fifth set in a five-set loss (25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 11-15) to host Cal State Monterey Bay.

Dominican looked sharper against Cal State Monterey Bay the second time around, though the result was ultimately the same. Dominican Head Coach Gayle Stammer tested out different lineups all weekend and sophomore Rebecca Schira was handed the setting duties in the nightcap. She responded with 49, matching senior Kelsey Lardner's 49-set performance earlier that day, while adding five block assists and an ace. Jessica Jones had 17 kills and 28 digs while Stocking-Siagkris (13), Wasko (11), and Callen (10) all reached double digit kills in the match. Stocking-Siagkris and sophomore Sari Kwan each had 24 digs. Wasko had four block assists and junior Samantha Rains assisted on six blocks.

Wasko was named to the Otter Classic All-Tournament team. She finished the weekend with 43 kills in four matches, three service aces, 51 digs, and 11 block assists.

The Penguins are back in action next week, Sept. 13 and 14, at the Seawolf Spike hosted by Sonoma State. Dominican will get another shot at San Francisco State, as well as CCAA opponents Sonoma State, Chico State, and Cal State Stanislaus.
