Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team looked like it may have a breaktrhough night on Saturday. The Penguins started hot and
Amanda Wasko recorded 12 kills but Dominican fell in four sets (25-20, 20-16, 22-25, 25-19) to visiting California Baptist University in Pacific West Conference play on Saturday night.
Dominican (1-9/0-2) built a 9-4 lead in set one and led 19-17 after four consecutive kills from the trio of
Jessica Jones, who had two of those kills, Wasko, and
Megan Callen. The Lancers (6-5/3-0) called timeout and caught fire by closing out the set on an 8-1 run and the early 1-0 match lead.
A Callen kill and a Lardner service ace gave Dominican another early lead in set two but the Lancers again stormed back to take a 7-3 advantage. The Penguins coudln't regain their footing and fell quickly in set two, 25-16.
Out of the intermission, Dominican fell behind 8-3 but kills from Jones and Wasko, paired with two CBU errors, put Dominican ahead 8-7. Leading 19-18, the Penguins used a 4-1 run to make it 23-19, then fended off a three-point Lancers run with a
Madeline Powelson kill to pull the Penguins within a set, 2-1.
The Penguins fell behind early yet again in set four and after trailing by as many as six points, pulled within a pair, 11-9. A 6-1 Lancers run again extended the deficit and while the Penguins pulled back within three, it was too little too late as California Baptist took the set 25-19 and the match.
Hannah Stocking-Siagkris added eight kills for the Penguins.
Kelsey Lardner dished out 36 assists and had a pair of service aces in the loss. Wasko had 10 digs while defensive specialists
Amanda Lee and
Sari Kwan had 17 and 11, respectively.
