Talavera powers Lady Penguins to win in final day of Tournament of Champions

Samantha Talavera is greeted at home plate after her two-run homer on Sunday, the first of her career.
Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. — Sophomore Samantha Talavera homered and drove in three runs as the Dominican University of California women's softball team left the Tournament of Champions on a winning note with a 7-1 victory over Cal State East Bay.

Less than twelve hours after falling 5-1 to the Pioneers (12-25) on Saturday night, the Lady Penguins (7-38) used a balanced offensive attack and another pitching gem from junior Karly Harris (5-19) to split the season series at three games apiece.

Sophomore shorstop Kayla Rodriguez led the game with one of her two walks and eventually scored on an error. Perry, who reached safely on the error, was at first base when Talavera launched a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right center field for her first career home run to make it 3-0 in the first.

Dominican added on in the second when junior Kayleigh Klingberg lined a single through the right side to score Rodriguez and freshman Marissa Cordisco. Perry followed with another single through the right side, scoring freshman Tori Johnson to extend the lead to 6-0.

Klingberg hit a ground-rule double to right center field in the fourth inning and scored on a Talavera single.

CSUEB starting pitcher Andi Anderson (2-7) was chased after an inning and a third. She allowed six runs but just two earned.

Harris needed just 84 pitches to get through the game and threw 54 for strikes. She induced 15 groundouts in her tenth complete-game effort. She allowed two hits in the first but retired eight consecutive batters before allowing another hit in the fourth. She then retired six more batters before Nicole Adair reached on a fielding error. A walk and a wild pitch moved Adair to third and she scored the Pioneers' lone run on a Sara Holdridge flare to center field in the sixth inning.

Talavera went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI to go with her home run. Rodriguez finished her day with a pair of walks, two runs, and was hit by a pitch. She leads the team with a .428 on-base percentage and in all three of those categories with 21 walks, 24 runs, and nine hit by pitch. In the field, she had a team-best seven assists, bringing her season total to a team-leading 140.

Klingberg went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Perry finished her day 1-for-4 with a run and RBI. Sarah McKenzie recorded her first collegiate hit, a slow roller to the right of second that the freshman legged out for an infield hit.

Dominican hosts Academy of Art University on Thursday, April 11 in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at McInnis Park with live stats available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
