Early scoring not enough vs. HPU

Dominique Perry drove in three runs in Tuesday's losses to HPU.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team scored early in both games of its Pacific West Conference doubleheader to Hawai'i Pacific University on Tuesday at McInnis Park but went on to drop the two contests, 4-2 and 10-3.

Sophomore Kayla Rodriguez got Dominican (5-31/0-18) going in the first when she went with a 3-1 pitch for a single past her counterpart at short. She moved over on a bunt by left fielder Tori Johnson, then both players advanced on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Leslie Mesa. Junior second baseman Kayleigh Klingberg walked to load the bases and junior catcher Dominique Perry drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. HPU's (17-11/10-8) Kristen Caskey (8-4) worked out of trouble though and left the bases loaded to limit the damage to 1-0.

Dominican's Karly Harris (4-16) worked out of trouble in the third to leave a pair but the Sea Warriors touched her for a pair of runs in the fourth. A leadoff triple by Celina Garces set up an RBI single by Caira Pires and Courtney Ahlo, who pinch ran for Pires, scored on a 2-2 single through the right side by Keila Elderts to take a 2-1 lead. The Sea Warriors added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when Rodriguez was unable to come up cleanly with a hard hit ball.

Klingberg cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth with her sixth homer of the season, a solo shot to right center on a full count.

In the nightcap, the Sea Warriors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Lady Penguins rallied to tie it in the bottom of the first. Rodriguez and Johnson both singled and Mesa singled home Rodriguez to make it 2-1. With one out, Perry singled through the left side to plate Johnson. HPU starter Alysia Maddison (4-2) also limited the damage early though and left the bases loaded.

HPU grabbed the lead right back with another pair of runs off of freshman Ashlyn Moriarity (1-15) in the second, then extended the lead to 6-2 in the third and chased Moriarity. With Harris pitching, HPU exteded its lead to 8-2 in the fifth, then runs in the sixth and seventh made it 10-3.

Dominican scored in the fifth inning of game two when Perry drove home an unearned run.

Perry finished her day 3-for-6 with three RBI. Mesa went 2-for-7 and continues to lead the Lady Pengins in hitting with a .349 clip. Rodriguez went 3-for-7 with a run and was hit by a pitch. She is second on the team hitting .278 and leads the team with a .417 OBP. Klingberg now has a team-high 21 RBI on the season and is slugging .534.

The Lady Penguins host UH Hilo on Wednesday, April 3. First pitch, originally slated for Monday, April 1 but postponed due to inclement weather, is still slated for 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. at McInnis Park. Live stats will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
