Lady Penguins drop doubleheader to No. 13 GCU

Tori Johnson went 3-for-5 with a run and a walk in Saturday's doubleheader at No. 13 GCU.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. — After a delay, the Dominican University of California women's softball team played better as the day went along but didn't get the results it was looking for in a pair of Pacific West Conference losses to No. 13 Grand Canyon University, 16-2 in five innings and 3-0, on Saturday.

Freshman outfielder Tori Johnson, who went 3-for-5 on the day, led off game one with a walk, then came home on junior catcher Dominique Perry's single to left field. Things quickly deteriorated for Dominican (4-14/0-6) in the bottom half of the inning. Junior pitcher Karly Harris, who was charged with loss and fell to 3-7, lasted just two innings and allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits. Freshman Ashlyn Moriarity struggled in relief and gave up 10 runs on 10 hits. However, her defense did her no favors, as she allowed just three earned runs.

Trailing 14-1 in the fourth, Dominican got a run back after junior first baseman Kayleigh Klingberg tripled. She scored on the next play when junior designated player Samantha Talavera reached based thanks to catcher's interference. The Antelopes (18-5/6-0) added another pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and the Lady Penguins were retired in order in the fifth.

In game two, Moriarity pitched considerably better but took a tough complete game loss and fell to 1-7 on the season. Moriarity's only hiccup came in the fourth inning for three runs on five hits but it was enough for the 'Lopes to hold on. GCU's Stephanie Pesquiera, who was named PacWest Pitcher of the Week in week one, pitched two innings in game one but came back for the complete game victory in game two to improve to 8-2.

Kelsey Barak, the preseason conference player of the year and last season's player and freshman of the year, went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI in game one but was held hitless in three at bats in game two.

The Lady Penguins head to Azusa Pacific University for another PacWest doublheader on Monday, March 11. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
