Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Junior
Karly Harris pitched a strong game and ended up going ten innings but the Dominican University of California women's softball team wasn't able to hold on in extra innings, and eventually fell 4-2 to visiting Chaminade University in 10 innings. In game two of the Pacific West Conference doubleheader, errors led to a 7-0 loss the Silver Swords.
Despite being saddled with the loss, Harris (4-14) pitched well in Dominican's first game of the season at McInnis Park. She scattered nine hits and struck out five. The Lady Penguins (5-27/0-14) grabbed an early 1-0 lead when the team's leading hitter,
Leslie Mesa, singled through the right side to plate leadoff hitter
Tori Johnson for a 1-0 lead. The Silver Swords (11-13/7-7) tied it up and took the lead in the second though. Dominican then rallied in the fourth to tie at 2-2 when Mesa scored on a hard-hit ball that third baseman Kori Berinobis knocked down but then let skip away. Harris worked out of jams in the sixth and seventh innings and retired eight straight batters but the runner placed on second because of international tiebreaker rules would haunt Dominican. The runner came home easily after a sacrifice bunt, followed up by a Rayan Strom-Okimoto shot up the middle. Elia Lizarraga singled up the middle to bring home an insurance run.
The Lady Penguins had six hits in game two but stranded five runners. Three errors allowed the Silver Swords to score in several different scenarios. Again, Chaminade scored twice in the second inning, then twice more in the third and two more again in the fourth. A single run in the sixth capped off the opponent's scoring. Freshman
Ashlyn Moriarity pitched a complete game in game two with five strikeouts but fell to 1-13.
Dominican held Chaminade's leading hitter, Shannan Hokama to just 1-for-7 with three strikeouts but the left side of Chaminade's infield made trouble at the plate for the Lady Penguins. Berinobis went 3-for-7 with three runs and a pair of RBIs. The shortstop, Strom-Okimoto, was 4-for-8 with a walk, run, and an RBI. Brett Aspel (6-7) and Kaitlyn Watanabe (5-5) earned complete game victores in circle for the Silver Swords.
Mesa, who has had a hit in 10 of her last 12 games, went 3-for-7 with a run and an RBI to raise her average to .337. She now has a team-best 31 hits. Junior catcher
Dominique Perry snapped a three-game drought and went 3-for-6.
The Lady Penguins are right back at it on Friday, March 29 in another PacWest doubleheader versus Chaminade. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. at McInnis Park. Live stats will be available at
