Lady Penguins fall behind solid efforts from Harris, infielders

Kayleigh Klingberg launched her team-best fourth homer of the season on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISBANE, Calif. — Despite a nice day at the plate for Kayla Rodriguez and a team-leading fourth home run by Kayleigh Klingberg, the Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped its Pacific West Conference doubleheader to Academy of Art University on Saturday by the scores of 3-0 and 8-7.

Junior Karly Harris pitched well in game one for Dominican (4-12/0-4) and allowed just four hits with a pair of strikeouts but four errors led to runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, enough to notch the victory for the Urban Knights (9-10/7-3). Samantha Talavera had a pair of hits and a walk but her Dominican teammates combined for just two more hits in game one.

In the nightcap, Dominique Perry and Samantha Talavera notched first-inning RBIs to give Dominican an early 2-0 lead. The lead grew to 3-0 in the third. Rodriguez, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in game two, started the inning off with a base hit up the middle, then swiped second. A Perry sacrifice bunt brought her home later in the inning.

The lead remained until the bottom of the sixth when Art U struck for eight runs on 10 hits and chased starting pitcher Ashlyn Moriarity.

Dominican stormed back with four runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run homer to center by Klingberg, but the rally came up short when Kimberly Dauer came in to get the strikeout and the save.

The Lady Penguins, who don't play a home game again until March 28, head to Grand Canyon University on Saturday, March 9 for another PacWest doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Phoenix.
