Lady Penguins fall in close games at No. 18 NDNU

Leslie Mesa went 5-for-6 with 2 RBI in Saturday's doubleheader loss to No. 18 NDNU.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team's road woes continued at No. 18 Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday. The Lady Penguins dropped both games of the Pacific West Conference doubleheader, 2-1 and 6-3.

Despite a complete game effort from freshman pitcher Ashlyn Moriarity (1-10), the Lady Penguins (4-20/0-10) were unable to hold onto an early 1-0 lead in game one. Dominican went ahead in the fourth thanks to its infielders. Shorstop Kayla Rodriguez single and stole second, then raced home on third baseman Leslie Mesa's RBI single. The Lady Penguins had a chance to add on when Mesa stole second and advanced to third with two outs but she was stranded there.

Moriarity issued a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the frame and NDNU (15-8/9-5) that allowed pinch runner Megan Chiem to cross home plate for the tying run.

Another leadoff walk nearly cost the Lady Penguins in the fifth inning but Kayleigh Klingberg, making her first start of the season at second base, threw home to catcher Dominique Perry to gun Courtney Azevedo at the plate with the bases loaded. However, Kaydi Kochi singled in the next at bat to give the Argos what would turn out to be the winning run.

In game two, junior pitcher Karly Harris (3-10) was touched up for five runs in three and two thirds innings. NDNU plated a pair in the second inning on two hits and added three more on four hits, including a homer from Hillary Ruddick, and a pair of Dominican errors in the fourth. Another error led to an unearned run in the sixth off of Moriarity, who pitched two and a third innings of relief.

Dominican got a run back in the third in familiar fashion. Mesa doubled home Rodriguez, who singled and moved herself into scoring position by swiping second. However, the Lady Penguins left the bases loaded and left 11 on in game two.

A Dominican rally in the seventh took advantage of two NDNU errors. Two runs came home on two hits but the Lady Penguins left the bases loaded yet again to end game two.

Sammy McConvey (7-3) earned the win for NDNU in game one in a three strikeout, complete game effort. Shelby Reali (6-3) also pitched a complete game in the nightcap and earned the victory despite issuing five walks.

On the day, Mesa went 5-for-6 with two RBI including a perfect 3-for-3 in game two, Kayla Rodriguez went 3-for-6 with three runs scored, two stolen bases, and was hit by a pitch. First baseman Samantha Talavera drove in 2 RBI and freshman Tori Johnson scored a run.

The Lady Penguins will look to change their luck in a St. Patrick's Day doubleheader on Saturday, March 17 at San Francisco State. First pitch of the non-conference matchup is slated for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
