Dominican bested by Jacks' long balls

Pitcher Ashlyn Moriarity hit her first career home run ut the Lady Penguins were bested by HSU on Wednesday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARCATA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team was haunted by the long ball in its non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Humboldt State University.

The Lady Penguins (4-18) went scoreless for the fourth consecutive game in the game one loss. A Hannah Williams homer to left field made it 1-0 in the second inning. Dominican looked to rally in the fourth with two outs and a pair on but the Jacks' (14-9) Lizzie Perez induced a fly ball to left.

Junior pitcher Karly Harris (3-9) gave up another homer in the fifth, though it came at a much higher cost. After allowing a leadoff single, Harris got Julie Pena to hit a ball to Kayleigh Klingberg, which the first baseman speared for the unassisted double play. However, back-to-back singles then a walk set up a bases loaded opportunity for Serena Aragones. The senior righty didn't miss and launched a grand slam to right center to make it 5-0.

In the nightcap, Dominican broke its 28 inning scoreless drought in the top of the first inning. Freshman Tori Johnson led things off with her team-leading 20th hit, a double to left center, and advanced to third on junior Leslie Mesa's single to left center. An error by Megan Wink allowed Johnson to cross the plate and the Lady Penguiins went up early 1-0.

Chrissy Staff got HSU right back into the game with a leadoff homer to right center in the Jacks' first at-bat. Back-to-back RBI by Courtney Hiatt and Sarah Fox quickly gave HSU the lead, 3-1. Dominican stranded another pair in the second and Wink made up for her error in the bottom half of the frame with a homer to make it 5-1. Junior Dominique Perry reached on a walk in the third inning for Dominican and she came home on Ashlyn Moriarity's two run homer to left center. The home run was the first of the freshman's college career.

The Jacks put things out of reach in the third though when Wink recorded hers second homer of the day, a grand slam. HSU added a run in the fourth and a Dominican rally in the top of the fifth came up short.

Harris pitched four and two thirds innings and gave up five runs on six hits in game one. Moriarity (1-9) threw one and a third innings of scoreless relief, then allowed four runs in on three hits in two and two thirds innings in the game two start. Harris allowed seven more runs, five earned, in one and a third innings of relief. For the Jacks, Perez earned the win in game one and pitched one and a third shutout innings of relief in game two to improve to 8-4.

Moriarity went 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI. Despite going 1-for-6 on the day Johnson leads the Lady Penguins with a .278 average.

The Lady Penguins travel to Notre Dame de Namur on Friday, March 15 for a Pacific West Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Belmont, Calif.
