Softball shuts out SF State, falls to Chico State

Harris named to All-Tournament Team

Karly Harris pitched a complete game shutout against San Francisco State on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. — A day after stunning No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay, the Dominican University of California women's softball posted a 1-1 day on the final day of the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The Lady Penguins (2-2) defeated San Francisco State 3-0 and fell to Chico State 7-2.

Against the Gators (3-1), Dominican pieced together a pair of runs in the second. Marissa Cordisco singled up the middle and Kayla Rodriguez reached on a bunt to third that was mishandled by SFSU third baseman Gabby Reta. Tori Johnson advanced them both with a successful sac bunt. That set things up for Kayleigh Klingberg, who continued her hot start with an RBI single to center field that made it 2-0.

The Lady Penguins added another run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Klingberg doubled to left center. Dominique Perry drove her home with a single up the middle that also chased SFSU pitcher Jenny Obbema, who was charged with the loss.

Dominican pitcher Karly Harris improved to 2-0 on the season with a complete game shutout. She scattered eight hits, struck out three, and walked just one. She worked out of trouble in the fifth with runners on first and second, then again in the seventh with runners on the corners.

Errors proved costly against Chico State (2-3). The Lady Penguins went up 1-0 in the top of the first against the Wildcats when Klingberg singled home Johnson.

After a leadoff walk and stolen base set up runners on the corners for Chico State, a throwing error allowed a run to score in the bottom half of the first, and a sac fly gave the Wildcats the lead, 2-1.

Dominican threatened in the second and loaded the bases with one out. Samantha Talavera was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice, then Johnson grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

Chico State broke it open in the bottom of the second with four runs. With two outs, freshman pitcher Ashlyn Moriarity allowed a single, issued a walk, then issued an RBI single. Another error kept the inning alive and allowed the Wildcats to capitalize. Moriarity, who was charged with six runs but just one earned, was unable to escape the inning and Harris came in to limit the damage. Harris allowed a solo leadoff homer in the fifth. Klingberg added a two-out home run in the seventh and Leslie Mesa doubled but that's as much as the Lady Penguins could get.

Harris, who appeared in all four games and pitched 17.1 innings, accumulated an ERA of 2.08. She was named to the All-Tournament Team. Her complete game shutout came against San Francisco State, who went 4-1 and was named Tournament Champion.

Klingberg finished the weekend 6-of-12 (.500) at the plate. Her double and pair of homers boosted her slugging percentage to 1.083. In 9.2 innings, Moriarity has eight strikeouts.

The Lady Penguins host Cal State Stanislaus on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Saint Mary's College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Moraga. Live stats will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
