Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California women's softball team fell victim to two-out rallies by No. 13 Dixie State University en route to an 8-0, five-inning loss in game one and rallied from down 10-0 to tie it in game two before bowing 14-10.
In game one, in the top of the first inning Dominican (4-8/0-2) pitcher
Karly Harris allowed a two-out single to right fielder Courtney Sherwin that scored Siera Phillips from second and gave the Red Storm (11-4/2-0) an early 1-0 lead.
Harris was chased in the third by a pair of Dixie State runs. A Phillips triple to center scored center fielder Courtney Hine, then Phillips scored on an Anna Cue full-count single through the right side thad made it 3-0.
Phillips recorded another triple in the fourth, off of
Ashlyn Moriarity with two outs, that scored a pair to make it 5-0.
After Dominican left with runners in scoring position in the second and fourth innings, right fielder
Marissa Cordisco broke up Mattie Snow's no-hitter in the fifth with a single to left field but was caught trying to stretch her single into a double. Left fielder
Tori Johnson followed with a single through the right side and shortstop
Kayla Rodriguez singled through the right side but Snow induced a pop up to third to get out of the jam.
The Red Storm ended game one early with a three-run rally in the fifth, capped by a two-out double to center by Hine.
Harris was pinned with both losses and fell to 3-4. Snow, selected as the PacWest's Preseason Pitcher of the Year, improved to 5-2 with seven strikeouts. Kate Coffey earned the game two win in 3.1 innings of work to improve to 1-1.
The Lady Penguins were cursed by omre two-out runs that crossed in the first and second innings and Dixie State had a 10-0 lead after a seven-run third.
An dropped ball to center put two runners on for Dominican in the top of the fourth and the Lady Penguins capitalized.
Tori Johnson had an RBI single to left field then, two batter later, first baseman
Kayleigh Klingberg unleashed with a grand slam. Her third homer of the season cut the lead to 10-5.
In the sixth, Dominican struck for five more runs to tie the ballgame at 10-10. Catcher
Dominique Perry, who went 1-for-3 with four walks, and a run, recorded an RBI single to center field. Third baseman
Leslie Mesa, followed with an RBI single through the left side, Moriarity doubled to right center to plate a pair, and the tying run crossed on a
Rachel Santiago groundout.
The Red Storm quickly regained the lead, and for good, in the bottom half of the inning though. With two out, Dixie State exploded for four runs. The Lady Penguins threatened in the seventh but left a pair stranded.
The games were the first between Dominican and Dixie State with both schools holding University status. Dixie State changed over from College to University on Feb. 16 of this year.
The Lady Penguins return to the Bay Area for a non-conference tilt at No. 19 Sonoma State on Thursday, Feb. 27. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
