Jessy Marshall added 10 points but but it wasn't enough to overcome a strong second half by Fresno Pacific University in a 62-53 Pacific West Conference loss on Saturday night.
Lauren Hyatt added eight points.
Danielle Yamauchi and
Noelle Roldan each added seven points with Yamauchi dishing out five assists.
Salonika Quewon-Owens pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.
Charde Stevens was one of three Sunbirds (2-8/2-2) to reach double digits with 14 points. Breana Buczek added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Dominican (0-11/0-5) led by as many as six points in the first half but trailed 25-24 at halftime, despite forcing 14 FPU turnovers. The Sunbirds committed just four turnovers and shot 50 percent (15-of-30) in the second half while the Penguins could never quite find their rhythm offensively, shooting 20-of-61 (.328) from the field on the night.
The Penguins will begin 2014 in Hawai'i with a three-game stint beginning Jan. 4 at UH Hilo.
