Box Score FRESNO, Calif. — Senior setter
Kelsey Lardner set the single-season assists record for the Dominican University of California women's volleyball team but the Penguins never found a rhythm and fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-21) at Fresno Pacific University in Pacific West Conference play on Tuesday evening.
Lardner, who already has the most career digs since Dominican joined the NCAA Division II, became the single-season career leader in the Division II era on kill from
Hannah Stocking-Siagkris and
Jessica Jones.
Lardner finished the match with 30 assists, giving her 878 and surpassing Brooke Swingle's single-season record of 850 set in 2009.
The two teams traded points in set one until FPU (14-11/9-9) pulled away on a four-point run to take a late 19-16 lead. The Sunbirds closed out the set on a three-point run to take the first set, 25-19.
Dominican fell behind early, 10-3, in set two but showed signs of life late.
The Penguins trailed 20-14 but pulled within a point, 24-23, powered by a pair of Stocking-Siagrkis kills and a Lardner service ace.
Set three was tight to start until the Sunbirds broke it open with the scored tied 10-10. A pair of Dominican errors and Morghan Williams kills gave FPU a 14-10 lead and while the teams traded points from there, Dominican was unable to make up ground as FPU closed it out 25-21.
Jones led the Penguins with 10 kills. Stocking-Siagrkis and
Amanda Wasko each added nine. Wasko led Dominican with 15 digs, followed by 14 from libero
Amanda Lee.
Madeline Powelson has 13 digs and Lardner finished with 10 digs.
FPU was led by Williams' 16 kills. She was one of four Sunbirds to reach double-digit kills. Hannah Butler led all players with 22 digs.
