Lady Penguins shoot way past Chaminade

Julia Brew poured in a career-high 19 points as five Penguins reached double digits in Monday's win at Chaminade.
Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i — Five Dominican University of California women's basketball players reached double digits as the Lady Penguins topped Chaminade University 95-69 at McCabe Gym on Monday evening in Pacific West Conference play. With the win, Dominican improved to 6-1 versus the Silver Swords since joining the PacWest in 2009.

The 95 points scored by Dominican at Chaminade was the most points the Lady Penguins have scored in a game since Nov. 18, 2009 when they defeated Pacific Union College 102-45 in Conlan Center.

The Lady Penguins (4-8/3-1) led 6-4 early and never looked back. Dominican shot the ball extremely well and poured in 38-of-95 (.400) field goal attempts, including 8-of-23 (.348) three pointers. Coupled with tenacious first half defense which forced 24 turnovers and 40 for the game, Dominican didn't allow the Silver Swords (1-8/1-3) to string together more than three points in a row in the first half.

Dominican built a healthy 49-26 lead thanks to 20-of-49 (.313) first half shooting. The 49 points were the Lady Penguins' biggest first half output since scoring 44 points in a Nov. 17 win over Cal State Stanislaus.

“We shot the ball well, crashed the boards hard, and executed at both ends of the floor. We really put together a complete game tonight,” said Dominican Head Coach Brianna Chambers. “The entire team shot the ball well and Julia Brew played exceptionally. She really showed what she can do for us.”

Brew led all players with a career-high 19 points on 9-of-19 shooting. The freshman's performance  included three three-pointers, only fitting as she entered play having launched exactly a third of her field goal attempts from deep.

Kimi Nakamura, who also takes nearly a third of her shots from behind the arc, did her damage early with four first-half threes. She finished with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting and five three pointers.

Salonika Quewon-Owens added 11 points and five rebounds in her second game for the Lady Penguins. Lauren Hyatt went 4-of-5 from the field for 10 points and Noelle Roldan reached double digits for the second game in a row with 10 points of her own.

Jasmine Cox scored seven points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. She added five steals, a pair of assists, and a block.

The Silver Swords were led by Hanna Curtis' 15 points. Kawakami added 11 points and Kaneaiakala had 10 points.

Dominican has one more game in Hawai'i. The Lady Penguins will face Hawai'i Pacific University on Wednesday, Jan. 7 in the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in downtown Honolulu. The men will play the early game at 5:00 p.m. HST followed by the women at 7:00 p.m. HST.
