Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the opening day of the Seawolf Spike, both by the score of 3-0, to Chico State and host Sonoma State, ranked No. 23 in the latest NCAA Division II rankings.
Junior
Jessica Jones had nine kills for the Lady Penguins (1-4) but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Wildcats' (5-0) Jessica Leek and Alex Shurtz, who combined for 31 of the team's' 49 kills. The Lady Penguins made just one attack error in the second set and posted a .312 attack percentage in that set but committed nine reception errors and five service errors over the course of the match. It was a close match though, with Dominican falling 25-21,25-19,25-15.
Against the No. 23 Seawolves (4-1) Dominican started off strong again but faded in the third set after falling 25-19, 25-21 in the first two sets. Madelyn Densberger served SSU to a 10-0 advantage in the third set as Dominican was unable to string together more than two consecutive points at a time and fell 25-10. Sophomore
Samantha Rains provided most of hte offense for the Lady Penguins with eight kills in the match and a .316 attack percentage. Senior
Skyler Moon added five kills and finished with nine on the day.
"We're a little banged up right now and it shows," said Head Coach
Gayle Stammer. "It's tough in a tournament setting because you have to be able to play back-to-back matches on consecutive days. At the same time it gives us the opportunity to let our younger players get out there and show what they're capable of."
Sari Kwan continued to prove herself, as the freshman libero recorded 23 digs and three service aces on the day. Fellow freshman
Jamie Lavitoria had 33 assists, 11 digs and a pair of service aces.
The Lady Penguins return to action in day two of the Seawolf Spike tomorrow vs. Cal State Stanislaus at 11:15 a.m. and No. 25 UC San Diego at 3:45 p.m. Live stats will be provided by Sonoma State.
