SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped both games of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader to second-place Grand Canyon University on Friday at McInnis Park.
The offense saw good production from leadoff hitter sophomore
Kayleigh Klingberg, who went 3-for-7 with a run and 3 RBI, and third baseman
Dominique Perry, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. However, the Lady Penguins (3-32/0-17) made seven errors on the day while the 'Lopes (26-13/13-3) kept a clean sheet. Six GCU runs came with two outs, six runs were unearned, and a pair dropped foul balls allowed GCU to stay alive with runners on.
Dominican trailed 3-0 early in game one and left the bases loaded in the first inning. Down 6-0 in the second, the Lady Penguins manufactured a run.
Jill Rizo led off the inning with a double to left center and moved to third on Perry's opposite field single to right field. Klingberg's RBI brought Rizo home. The 'Lopes got the run back in the third to make it 7-1. Dominican pulled to 7-4 with a three-run fourth inning. Perry led off with a single, followed by a
Kelly Borges walk. They both scored on a double to center field by Klingberg, who sped home on freshman
Leslie Mesa's sacrifice fly. The 'Lopes put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
In game two, Dominican started the first inning by drawing three walks but left the bases loaded again. GCU took advantage and scored in the bottom half of the first. Dominican took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second when Borges singled home Rizo, followed by a
Kellie Hislop bunt that scored pinch runner
Cortnie Chenoweth. GCU took the lead right back in the bottom half of the second though with a pair of runs. After
Karly Harris threw a 1-2-3 inning, the Lady Penguins had a chance to tie it in the third but left the bases loaded yet again. Harris was roughed up in the fourth inning and was relieved by Robb. By the end of the inning the 'Lopes had extended the lead to 8-2. Two more runs in the fifth ended the game.
The Lady Penguins face GGU again on Saturday, April 7 for another PacWest doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. at McInnis Park.
