Lady Penguins Swing For a Cause on Sunday, April 15

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team will "Swing for a Cause" on Sunday, April 15 in a 12: 00 p.m. doubleheader at Academy of Art University. While the two teams will face off on the field, they're teaming up to support local causes. Dominican and ArtU will wear special jerseys that will be auctioned off in a silent auction during the doubleheader. Donations and proceeds from Dominican's jerseys will support the spinal injury work of Kentfield Rehabilitation and Specialty Center while proceeds from ArtU's jerseys will support the Amber Craig Memorial Foundation, which helps others prevent suicide through education.

Senior Kellie Hislop's family, including her aunt Sue Arrouze, have been fixtures in the stands for the past four seasons cheering on Hislop and the Lady Penguins. In November, Arrouze, a firefighter captain for CAL FIRE, suffered a spinal cord injury on the job. Yet, she has still come to as many games as possible to support the team. Therefore it was a no-brainer for Head Coach Roni Sparrey's team to choose a cause that supports those who have sustained spinal cord injuries in the line of duty.

Donations to the Kentfield Rehabilitation and Speciality Hospital will go directly towards the purchase of a LifeGait, a walking device which simultaneously controls a person's body weight, posture, and balance over a treadmill or in open spaces. The LifeGait will assist spinal cord patients to achieve a standing position while providing a safe environment for them to begin standing and walking training with their therapists.

"It's important for families to know that your loved one is receiving the best possible care during their recovery," said Hislop. "This machine will go a long ways in helping people in the recovery process."
