Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. — Things came together for the Dominican University of California women's softball team on Sunday in the team's final game of the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno and hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The Lady Penguins left Turlock on a winning note, coming from behind to beat Humboldt State 5-4.
Karly Harris allowed four hits on seven hits in four innings. While it wasn't the sophomore's sharpest outing of the season, she was rewarded with the win. Senior
Shawna Robb earned her first save of the season with three strikeouts in hree scoreless innings of two-hit softball.
Things looked daunting in the third inning for Dominican. After retiring the first two batters, Harris gave up three straight doubles, capped with a single that resulted in a 3-0 Humboldt State lead.
The Dominican offense took advantage of a defensive miscue and a pair of wild pitches by Alyssa Castillo in the fourth inning. Freshman center fielder
Leslie Mesa led off with a singled through the left side and came home on a squeeze by
Samantha Talavera. Robb, who reached on an error by shortstop Andrea Chavez, scored on third baseman
Dominique Perry's bases-loaded single through the right side. Freshman shortstop
Kelly Borges followed iwth a bases-loaded walk that allowed Talavera to trot home. Sophomore left fielder
Kayleigh Klingberg hit a sacrifice fly off of reliever Jennifer Sizemore to left that scored right fielder
Rachel Santiago, who reached on a walk. Senior second baseman
Kellie Hislop capped off the inning by doubling home junior
Cortnie Chenoweth, who pinch ran for Perry. Despite just one run being earned, Dominican had the lead 5-3 and wouldn't look back.
"Everything came together for us today," said Head Coach
Roni Sparrey. "We did what we needed to do to win. We had big hits, we made pitches, and we executed on offense and defense."
First baseman Chrissy Stalf led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to right center to cut the lead to 5-4 but Robb came in to retire the next six batters she faced in order. HSU threatened in the seventh but Robb struck out third baseman Alicia Reid to end the game.
"Shawna had a beautiful pitch to end the game," added Sparrey. "Hopefully this win gives us momentum headed back into conference play."
Dominican returns to San Rafael for a pair of Pacific West Conference doubleheaders vs. Grand Canyon University on Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7. First pitch on Friday is 12:00 p.m. while first pitch on Saturday is slated for 11:00 a.m. Both games will be played at McInnis Park.
