Box Score 2 HILO, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's softball team hasn't exactly experienced paradise during their 12-game road trip to Hawai'i. The Lady Penguins (2-15/0-4) have had four games rained out, and on Friday dropped a Pacific West Conference doubleheader to the University of Hawai'i, Hilo (8-1/3-0) and lost freshman shortstop
Kayla Rodriguez to injury for the immediate future in the very first inning.
After being hit by a pitch to reach base, Rodriguez attempted to steal second and was blocked at the bag, which resulted in her injuring her shoulder on the slide. Before the play Rodriguez, the teams hits and runs leader, was a perfect 7-of-7 in stolen base attempts. Freshman
Leslie Mesa and sophomore
Kayleigh Klingberg followed with back-to-back singles but were stranded. Dominican didn't have another hit until the sixth inning when senior
Shawna Robb double to right center. UHH strung together three-run innings in the first and sixth innings, and added a run in the fourth. Robb pitched 5.1 innings and gave up all seven runs to take the loss and fall to 1-5.
In game two, the Lady Penguins' offense remained dormant and the roster was held hitless. Senior
Jill Rizo broke up Jessica Pepin's (2-1) perfect game by running out a dropped third strike in the fifth inning. Senior
Jessi Saaty pitched well though, as she recorded the last two outs of the game one and then held the Vulcans scoreless through the first four innings of game two. She took the eventual loss to fall to 0-4 on the season.
"It's always tough when a player [like Kayla] goes down, especially early in the game," said Head Coach
Roni Sparrey. "Jessi pitched well and picked us up but we're going to have to find ways to score runs without Kayla, and we'll have to do it quickly since we play again tomorrow."
Dominican wraps up its road trip to Hawai'i on Saturday with another doubleheader against UHH. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Hilo.
