Box Score 2 LAIE, Hawai'i — Limited by lots of rain and little practice time during its first seven days in Hawai'i, the Dominican University of California softball team struggled to put the bat on the ball on Thursday in a doubleheader loss to BYU-Hawaii.
The Seasiders (5-5/2-4) downed the Lady Penguins (2-15/0-4) twice by scores of 8-1 and 9-1 (5) at Central Oahu Regional Park, a make-up of
a doubleheader that was postponed on Saturday due to inclement weather. Dominican managed to play a doubleheader on Sunday but two more scheduled doubleheader rainouts were washed out, leaving the Lady Penguins to search for a place to take batting practice.
“We've been practicing most of the time outside the [team] hotel and in the rain,” said Head Coach
Roni Sparrey. “There's not a lot we can do. The players have been cooped up.”
Freshman
Kayla Rodriguez, who led the team in on-base percentage and stole a pair of bases on Thursday, scored both of the Lady Penguins' runs against BYU-Hawaii. She came home on a misplayed wind-blown flyball down the leftfield line in the first game and scored from second base on an RBI single by senior
Kellie Hislop in the second game.
Sparrey also praised the pitching of senior
Shawna Robb.
“We're starting to see some really good things from Kayla, Kellie, and
Kayleigh [Klingberg]. We're just looking for a few more players to contribute,” Sparrey said. “The story with our team so far this season is we haven't yet put everything together. If our pitching is on, our defense is off. If our defense is on, our hitting is off. We are kind of beating ourselves… We're just trying to get these girls to figure out how to collectively put it all together.”
Klingberg drove home an RBI on a wind-blown ball that score Rodriguez in game one.
The Lady Penguins resume their PacWest road trip through Hawai'i with doubleheaders against the University of Hawai'i, Hilo on Friday and Saturday afternoons on the Big Island.
