Dominican Drops Rain-Marred Doubleheader at Chaminade

Karly Harris and the Lady Penguins dropped their Pacific West Conference opener doubleheader at Chaminade on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPIO, Hawai'i — The best thing about the Dominican University of California softball team's doubleheader on Sunday is the Penguins got it in and get a much-needed day off.

Playing through periodic rain showers, Dominican dropped both ends of the Pacific West Conference twinbill, losing to host Chaminade University 4-2 in the opener before bowing 10-2 in six innings in the nightcap. The Silverswords (4-5/2-0) collected 15 hits off three pitchers by the Lady Penguins (2-13/0-2) in the second game.

Sophomore Kayleigh Klingberg, the team's leading hitter, had three of Dominican's five hits in the opener to raise her batting average to .324. She had a lead-off double and scored in the second inning and drove in freshman Kayla Rodriguez with the Lady Penguins' second run in the third inning.

Dominican had runners on first and second with one out in the fourth, but couldn't sustain the rally and Klingberg led off the sixth inning with a single but the Lady Penguins couldn't get her around.

Dominican couldn't recover from a four-run first inning by Chaminade. The Silverswords got four of their six hits off starter Shawna Robb before Karly Harris relieved her with two outs and the bases loaded. Harris retired the last batter in the first then allowed only two hits and no runs over the next four innings.

Harris tired in the second game, trailing 2-0. Senior Jessi Saaty replaced her to start the third inning and allowed a run, increasing Chaminade's lead to 3-0.

The Lady Penguins got that run back as freshman Kelly Borges, after walking, came around to score on a clutch two-strike, two-out RBI single by senior Kellie Hislop.

Hislop also drilled a stand-up double with two outs in the fifth.

Senior Jill Rizo had Dominican's other big hit in the game — a lead-off double to leftfield that just missed being a home run in the fourth inning. Pinch-runner Cortnie Chenoweth eventually scored the team's second run on a ground out by sophomore Rachel Santiago.

Dominican has a scheduled day-off on Monday before playing Chaminade again on Tuesday, March 6 starting at 6:30 p.m. Pacific time. It will be the first of five consecutive days of doubleheaders for the Lady Penguins on their road trip to Hawai'i. That includes the make-up doubleheader on Thursday, March 8 with BYU-Hawaii, which was postponed due to rain on Saturday.
