Turlock, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped a close 3-0 Pacific West Conference decision to second-place Cal Baptist University on Saturday, followed by a 12-4 loss to Western Washington University in five innings and a 9-1 loss to Montanta State University - Billings, also in five innings. The games were part of the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno and hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.

The game vs. CBU was counted as a conference game in order to make up a rainout earlier in the month. The second game of the doubleheader with CBU will be made up at McInnis Park on Monday, April 23 at 12:00 p.m.

Sophomore Karly Harris tossed five shutout innings for Dominican (2-29/0-15) but was the victim of a lack of run support. Her teammates provided just one hit, a Kayleigh Klingberg leadoff double in the first inning. She reached third but was picked off later in the inning. Dominican had another chance in the second inning when Rachel Santiago and Samantha Talavera both walked. Kelly Borges kept the inning alive by reaching on an error but Klingberg grounded out to end the threat. Despite not having a base again until the sixth inning, the Lady Penguins did show patience by drawing four walks in the game.

Harris struck out five but was burned by a two-out, two-run homer by Sloan McHann in the sixth inning and a April Vasquez homer in the seventh inning. Unfortunately for Harris and the Lady Penguins, Tori Ferreira threw a complete game one-hitter for the Lancers (32-5/15-4).

Senior pitcher Shawna Robb went 2-for-3 against Western Washington (7-23) but the Lady Penguins couldn't protect another early lead. The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning but Dominican manufactured three runs on three hits. Senior Kellie Hislop singled and scored on double by Leslie Mesa, who advanced to third on the throw home that Hislop beat. Senior Jill Rizo sacrifice bunted to plate Mesa. Rizo was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Talavera and came home on a Robb single down the right field line.

WWU tied it right back in the fourth inning, then the Lady Penguins took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning on a Klingberg double that plated Kelly Borges for an unearned run. Dominican's bullpen struggled in the circle in the fifth though and was roughed up for nine runs on eight hits.

The game. Montana State University - Billings had its start time pushed back nearly three hours due to weather. Dominican took an early 1-0 lead on a Rizo singled that plated Mesa after she doubled in the previous at bat. The Yellowjackets, who received votes in the latest NCAA Division II women's softball poll, struck for four runs in the second though and closed things out with five runs on six hits in the fifth inning.

Dominican will play one last game in the Tournament of Champions vs. Humboldt State. The 'Jacks took both games of a doubleheader between the two teams back on Feb. 18. First pitch is slated for 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 1.
