Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped both decisions on Friday in the team's first two games of the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno and hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. Dominican fell 7-2 to Saint Martin's and 3-1 to Western Oregon University.
The Lady Penguins (2-27) squeezed a pair of runs out in the fifth inning in their first game against Saint Martin's (17-8-1). Freshman catcher
Samantha Talavera reached on catcher's interference and scored on an error. Freshman infielder
Kelly Borges, having missed the last four games due to injury, then plated an RBI single to score senior
Shawna Robb. It was too little, too late though as it wasn't enough to erase an early 4-0 Saints lead. Seniors
Jill Rizo and
Jessi Saaty also had hits in the game.
Things looked promising against Western Oregon (6-16) with Dominican taking an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the third inning. Borges singled down the left field line, stole second, and scored on
Leslie Mesa's single to center field. Unfortunately for the Lady Penguins, Amanda Evola hit a three-run homer to center in the bottom half of the inning. Dominican threatened in each of the next four innings but left a baserunner stranded each time.
Dominican will look for a win on Saturday with three more games on the second and final day of the Tournament of Champions. They'll start at 8:45 vs. Cal Baptist. That game will count as a Pacific West Conference game in place of part of a doubleheader that was rained out earlier in the month. At 2:15 the Lady Penguins will face Western Washington University and the day will conclude with a 5:45 showdown against Montana State University - Billings.
