Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team was stifled by stellar pitching on Thursday and fell 8-0 (5) and 9-0 (5) to Hawai'i Pacific Univeristy. The Pacific West Conference doubleheader was a makeup game of a rainout in Hawai'i from earlier in the month and was played at Pedretti Park, where the two teams will participate in the Tournament of Champions Presented by Mizuno later this weekend.
Senior
Kellie Hislop's double in the fourth inning broke up a perfect game for Breanne Patton, the 2011 PacWest Pitcher of the Year. Freshman
Leslie Mesa followed her with a walk but Patton didn't allow another baserunner after that.
Samantha Talavera crushed a pitch to straightaway center to lead off the third inning but it was caught at the wall by center fielder Keila Elderts. HPU plated three runs, including a two-run Patton homer, in the second inning and added five more in the third inning.
A leadoff walk and back-to-back errors led to an early 2-0 lead for the Sea Warriors in game two. A seven-run inning in the third left no doubt for HPU. Dominican was limited to singles by sophomore
Kayleigh Klingberg and senior
Jill Rizo.
Dominican will now compete in the Tournament of Champions Presented by Mizuno and hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. On Friday, first pitch against Saint Martin's University is set for 8:00 a.m., followed by a 10:00 a.m. showdown with Western Oregon University.
