Lady Penguins Wrap Up Hawai'i Trip with Losses to UHH

Kayleight Klingberg had three hits in Saturday's doubleheader in Kona vs. UHH.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KONA, Hawai'i – The Dominican University of California softball team is flying home Sunday from Hawai'i. They can't wait to get home.

The Lady Penguins appreciated the lush beauty, warm hospitality, and stiff competition afforded in the Aloha state, but unfortunately they didn't much enjoy the great lengths they had to go to play or practice softball in unusually inclement weather. The rain-marred 10-day road trip ended on Saturday when the team had to bus 60 miles from its hotel in Hilo across the Big Island to Kona to play Pacific West Conference rival University of Hawai'i, Hilo. The Lady Penguins' scheduled afternoon doubleheader against the Vulcans was moved to Kona in the evening because UHH's homefield diamond was flooded.

The long day concluded with Dominican (2-17/0-6) dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the first-place Vulcans (10-1/5-0) by scores of 8-0 and 7-1 at Old Airport Park. TheLady  Penguins then trekked back to Hilo where they were scheduled to fly to Honolulu on Sunday morning for their non-stop flight back to the Mainland.

“Overall it was a disappointing trip but there are a lot of games left so we have to go to work this week and focus on our offense,” said Head Coach Roni Sparrey.

Sophomore Kayleigh Klingberg had three hits in Saturday's doubleheader and led the Dominican with seven on the road trip. Senior Kellie Hislop had Dominican's lone hit in the first game and scored the team's only run in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher Karly Harris entered the second game in relief in the first inning and limited the Vulcans to only one run and three hits the rest of the way. Shawna Robb and Jessi Saaty also pitched well on the trip with little offensive support.

Dominican played both games on Saturday without injured freshman Kayla Rodriguez, the team leader in runs scored. She was hurt in a first-inning collission in Friday's doubleheader loss in Hilo.

The Lady Penguins had three of their five scheduled doubleheaders on the road trip postponed by rain or poor playing conditions and another one moved a 90-minute drive away. They made-up one doubleheader – at BYU-Hawaii on Oahu on Thursday – but two others against Hawai'i Pacific University and Chaminade University will either be played in California later this season or cancelled all together.

The Lady Penguins will have time to recover before playing again. Dominican's next game is at home, at McInnis Park in San Rafael, on Monday, March 19, when they host the PacWest's newest member, California Baptist University, for a doubleheader. Game times are 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
