Lady Penguins Drop Decisions to CSUMB, CSUS

Senior Kellie Hislop leads Dominican with a .333 average, 6 RBIs, 11 bases, and 6 HBP.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped both of its games in the second and final day of the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational at Pedretti Park. The Lady Penguins fell 9-1 in five innings to Cal State Monterey Bay and a late comeback came up short in a 5-4 loss to host Cal State Stanislaus.

vs. Cal State Monterey Bay

Against Cal State Monterey Bay, the momentum initially seemed to carry over for Dominican from Saturday's 5-4 victory over San Francisco State. Freshman Leslie Mesa led the game off with a single down the right field line and scored two batters later on Kellie Hislop's single up the middle to give the Lady Penguins the early 1-0 advantage.

However, the lead didn't stick long for Dominican (2-4). Cal State Monterey Bay took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run Jackie Serna home run down the left field line.

A Nina Villanueva homer to center in the second inning and a two-run, two-out Nicole Pires home run in the fourth inning made it 5-1.

The Otters (3-1) ended it in the fifth inning with a five-hit, four-run inning for a final of 9-1.

Dominican used three pitchers in the game. Senior Jessi Saaty took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the early season.

Mesa went 2-for-3 with a run and Hislop was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

vs. Cal State Stanislaus

After two scoreless innings, Cal State Stanislaus (3-3) got on the board first. Brittany Balanesi started the inning with a single to center, followed by a bunt single off the bat of Brittani Weatherford. A Vanessa Del Toro single up the middle drove in Balanesi and Weatherford. Pitcher Shawna Robb limited the damage by stranding a pair.

The Lady Penguins (2-5) got a run back in the bottom half of the third. Catcher Samantha Talavera singled down the left field line and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Kelly Borges. Talavera advanced to third on a Kayla Rodriguez single and scored on senior Kellie Hislop's single through the left side.

A three-hit, three-run fifth inning pushed the Cal State Stanislaus lead to 5-1 and would end up being the difference.

Dominican made a run for it in the sixth inning with three runs. Hislop was hit by a pitch, followed by a Kayleigh Klingberg double. Dominique Perry was hit by a pitch and Jessi Saaty single in Hislop. Cal State Stanislaus made a pitching change from Brieanna Stone to Kiley Mendez but the Warriors struggled with their command. Talavera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Klingberg. Rachel Santiago, who pinch ran for Perry, beat the throw on a ball hit by Borges. The Lady Penguins stranded runners at first and second to end the inning.

Dominican had a chance in the bottom of the seventh when Hislop was hit by a pitch but the Lady Penguins were unable to bring her home.

Robb was charged with the loss and falls to 1-1 on the young season.

Hislop, one of six Lady Penguins to start in all seven games so far, raised her average to a team-high .333. She also has a team-high five RBIs and 11 bases. Hislop has been hit by a pitch six times, also the most on the team. Klingberg went 2-for-4 to raise her average to .313.

The Lady Penguins are off for nearly two weeks before returning to the diamond for a doubleheader vs. Humboldt State on Saturday, February 18. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. Those games will be played at Saint Mary's College in Moraga.
