Box Score 2 MORAGA, Calif. — Timely errors led the Dominican University of California women's softball team to drop a non-conference doubleheader to Cal State East Bay on Tuesday afternoon at Cottrell Field on the campus of Saint Mary's College.
The Pioneers (11-11) took en early 1-0 lead in the first inning and took advantage of an error at third base. The next batter, Taryn Thomas, tripled and drove a pair of runs. Hesitation on the part of the Dominican (2-11) infield led to a fielder's choice that saw no out recorded and a run cross the plate. It was 4-0 by the time the inning was over and an eight-run fourth inning sealed the outcome of game one.
The Lady Penguins took an early lead in game two. Freshman
Kayla Rodriguez walked and stole second. Senior
Shawna Robb drove her home with a hit to left field. A pair of errors at second base would give the lead right back to the Pioneers though. After Thomas was caught stealing for the second out, Mishka Hamor reached on an error, which alowed a run to come home on the play. Two more unearned runs came across the plate to give CSUEB a 3-1 lead. The Pioneers tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth and Dominican looked as though they might rally back. Senior
Jill Rizo doubled down the right field line and junior
Cortnie Chenoweth walked. Freshman
Kayla Rodriguez singled to load the bases but the rally was ended by a double play. Freshman
Leslie Mesa singled in the seventh inning but the Lady Penguins would rally no further.
Senior Robb and
Jessi Saaty were charged with the losses to fall to 1-3 and 0-4, respectively. Despite taking the loss, Saaty threw a complete game and gave up just two earned runs.
At the plate, Robb went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Rizo went 2-for-5 and Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.
Dominican will now embark for a 12-game, week long roadtrip to Hawai'i to begin Pacific West Conference play. They'll start with a doubleheader at BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, March 3. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Laie, Hawai'i.
