Lady Penguins Drop Weekday Pair at Cal State East Bay

Kayleigh Klingberg hit her first home run of 2012 in Wednesday's loss to Cal State East Bay.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Cal State East Bay on Wednesday 8-5 and 9-1 (5). The Lady Penguins (2-9) left 11 runners on base and weren't able to hang onto leads in either decision versus the Pioneers (9-7).

It was a see-saw affair in game one. The Lady Penguins put up four runs in the top of the first inning on just two hits. Freshmen Leslie Mesa and Kayla Rodriguez walked to start the game, then sophomore Dominique Perry was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Kayleigh Klingberg doubled to left center to bring in the pair of freshmen. Senior Jill Rizo then walked and sophomore Rachel Santiago plated her fellow sophomores with a single to left field. However, Dominican stranded runners at second and third and it would come back to haunt them.

The Pioneers shaved a run off in the second inning and tied the game in the third inning on a three-run homer by Taylor Neumann. Dominican regained the lead in the top of the fourth on an unearned run but left the bases loaded. The Pioneers answered in the bottom half of the fourth with two runs and tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Dominican rallied in the top of the fifth and seventh innings but left a pair of runners on in both instances.

In game two, Kayleigh Klingberg hit a two-run homerun to give Dominican the early 1-0 advantage. Cal State East Bay capitalized on a Dominican error in the third and took the lead 2-1. The flood gates opened when the Pioneers posted a seven-run fourth inning on five hits and three more Dominican errors.

Senior pitcher Shawna Robb took the complete loss in game one to fall to 1-2. Sophomore pitcher Karly Harris fell to 1-4 after being chased in the third inning of game two.

Klingberg went 2-for-5 on the day with a pair of runs and 3 RBIs. Santiago went 2-for-6 with a run and two RBIs.

The Lady Penguins will have another shot at Cal State East Bay on Tuesday, February 28. That is a home doubleheader that will be played at Saint Mary's College in Moraga. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
