Box Score 2 MORAGA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Humboldt State on Saturday at Cottrell Field on the campus of Saint Mary's College. The Lady Penguins took an early lead in game one but eventually fell 5-2 and dropped the nightcap 11-0 in six innings.
In game one, Dominican got things going early in the bottom of the first inning.
With one out,
Kayla Rodriguez singled to shortstop, then stole second base. She advanced to third base on a throwing error and came around to score on a
Dominique Perry single down the left field line. Senior
Kellie Hislop, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on an error. However, the Lady Penguins left the bases loaded and it would cost them later.
Humboldt State shaved off a run in the third inning, then broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning. Dani Randall gave the 'Jacks the lead with a three-run homer and Sammi Gilbert brought Tanya Walker home on a groundout to add another run.
In game two, it was all Humboldt State. The 'Jacks put up three runs in the third, added two in the fourth, and six runs in the sixth inning. Three 'Jacks hit round trippers in the game.
"We have to be able to step on the gas and take advantage when we have big opportunities," said Head Coach
Roni Sparrey. "At the same time, we need to keep ourselves out of vulnerable situations and when we are in tough spots we need to make pitches and work our way out of them."
Freshman
Kelly Borges had a solid day at the plate and went 2-for-5. Rodriguez scored her team-leading fifth run. Despite being outhit 25-5 on the day, the Lady Penguins didn't record an error and raised their team fielding percentage to .945, a .04 mark better than their opponents.
Senior
Jessi Saaty was saddled with both losses for Dominican and fell to 0-4 on the season. Kayla Evans and Jessica George earned the wins for Humboldt State. With the losses, Dominican fell to 2-7 while Humboldt State improved to 6-5.
Dominican will next step onto the diamond on Wednesday, February 22 for another non-conference doubleheader when they travel to Hayward to face Cal State East Bay. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
