Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. — Things went right for the Dominican University of California women's basketball team for 38 minutes. Then Holy Names University surged back and stunned Dominican in a 77-74 loss in the Pacific West Conference opener.
The Lady Hawks (1-3/1-0), one of four new teams who joined the PacWest this season, led by seven early in the first half but Dominican (1-4/0-1) kept things close. Senior guard
Stephanie Carnes scored seven first-half points and the Lady Penguins trailed just 41-39 at halftime.
Back-to-back three pointers from senior guard
Kimi Nakamura gave Dominican a 42-41 just a minute into the second half. Another Nakamura three-ball and a shot by
Yvonne Sanchez quickly doubled a five-point Dominican lead with 6:34 to go. The Lady Hawks quickly recovered those five points though and trimmed the lead to four with five minutes to play. Dominican limited HNU to 13-of-44 (.295) shooting from the field in the second half and .321 for the game but couldn't fend off a late surge by the Lady Hawks. Baskets by Britney Postestio and Jasmine Grant evened the game at 74-74 with just over a minute left and a Postestio layup with half a minute on the clock gave HNU its first lead of the second half. Yesenia Garzon made a free-throw to put HNU up three but missed the back end, which sophomore center
Lauren Hyatt reeled in for Dominican. The Lady Penguins called timeout with 11 seconds to go but couldn't get one last three-pointer to fall.
Postestio led HNU with 23 points and Sonia Aguilar added 22 points. Grant finished with 12 points.
Nakamura's 12 points on four three-pointers led Dominican. Hyatt and sophomore center
Sarah Nelson both added double-doubles. Hyatt scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Nelson scored 10 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and recorded six more blocks for 19 total on the season.
The Lady Penguins will look to earn their first PacWest win on Saturday, Dec. 8 when Notre Dame de Namur University comes calling. Tipoff against the Argos is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Conlan Center. Live coverage will be available at
