Streaky Lady Penguins Fall at Azusa Pacific

Jessica Jones' 15 kills led Dominican in Wednesday's 3-1 loss at Azusa Pacific.
Box Score AZUSA, Calif. — It was the tale of two teams for the Dominican University of California women's volleyball team as they fell in four sets (18-25, 27-25, 8-25, 23-25) on Wednesday in Pacific West Conference play.

Dominican (6-17/4-11) played gritty in set two after falling 25-18 in set one and forced extra points to take the set 27-25. The Lady Penguins jumped out to a 6-0 lead but the Cougars (20-8/10-6) chipped away and finally evened the set at 21 apiece. The Lady Penguins lost the lead at 22-21 but rallied back at 22-22 and from there traded points until kills by Skyler Moon and Jessica Jones helped take the set.

All the momentum that Dominican gained in set two disappeared in set three. Azusa Pacific took an early 3-0 lead and used a 10-1 run to streak to the 25-8 decision.

Dominican looked like another comeback was in order. Consecutive kills from Jones, Ashlee Sand, and Kelsey Larder built an 8-4 lead and kills from Hannah Stocking-Siagkris and Moon extended the lead to 14-9. However, a 6-1 Cougars run evened the set at 18 apiece and a Tuig Vander kill put Azusa Pacific ahead 20-19. The Lady Penguins evend the score three more times but a Jackie Landers kill followed by a Dominican attack error ended the set and the match.

Jones topped the Lady Penguins with 15 kills, followed by 10 kills and 12 digs from Stocking-Siagkris. Freshman Sari Kwan had a team-high 22 digs. Lardner added 10 digs and dished out 30 assists.

Azusa Pacific had four players with double-digit kills, led by 20 from Landers.  Senior setter Sophie Burns recorded a career-high 55 assists in the match as the Cougars posted their ninth straight 20-win season with the win,

The Lady Penguins continue their final road trip of the season with a match in Riverside at California Baptist University. They'll face the Lancers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, then finish the season with a match in San Diego at Point Loma on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m.
