Lady Penguins Can't Recover From Slow Start

Sari Kwan led the Lady Penguins with 15 digs on Thursday.
Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team got off to a slow start on Thursday and never quite recovered in a straight set loss, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18, to Dixie State College.

The Lady Penguins (5-11/3-5) got 15 digs from freshman libero Sari Kwan but four-point and five-point runs in the first set established the Red Storm (6-8/4-5) attack early. A 7-1 Dixie State run had Dominican behind early in set two and a 9-2 run found Dominican trailing 2-0 in the match. The Lady Penguins fell behind 10 points in set three but rallied late with a 6-2 run sparked by a pair of kills from junior Jessica Jones and a service ace from Kwan. However, Dixie State scored the final two points to fend of the Lady Penguins' run.

Jones led Dominican with eight kills. Senior Ashlee Sand added five kills and sophomore Samantha Rains recorded four kills. Hannah Stocking-Siagrkis had 11 digs to go with three service aces and three kills.

Pauline VonDinklage led the Red Storm with 11 kills and Makenzi Bird added 10 kills on 20 attempts.

From Utah, Dominican will travel to Arizona to face Grand Canyon University. The 'Lopes are ranked No. 16 in the most recent NCAA Division II women's volleyball rankings. First serve is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 in Phoenix.
