PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped a pair of Pacific West Conference games to Dixie State College by the scores of 20-6 in five innings and 6-4 on Saturday afternoon at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
The Lady Penguins (1-32,0-16) fell behind 8-0 after just the first inning and trailed 12-1 by the second. Freshman
Kayleigh Klingberg opened the top of the third inning with her first career homer. In the fourth inning, Dominican recorded just one hit but took advantage of a pair of errors to bring home four runs.
In game two, with Dominican batting as the home team, the Lady Penguins scored first when junior
Kellie Hislop came home on an error. GCU (15-18,7-7) struck for four runs in the top of the fourth but Dominican rallied right back in the bottom of the inning. Klingberg doubled, which brought home freshman
Rachel Santiago and sophomore
Molly Howard. Freshman
Crystal Albert's double to center tied the game at 4-4. The 'Lopes struck for a run in the sixth though and added an insurance run in the seventh.
Klingberg finished the day 3-for-5 with a walk, two runs, and 3 RBIs. Santiago had a pair of hits and a pair of runs. Albert finished with the game-tying hit, a walk, a run, and an RBI.
The Lady Penguins will get a second chance at the 'Lopes on Sunday, April 9. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m.
