BOX SCORES: vs. Chico State | vs. Cal State Monterey Bay

TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped a pair of games, 6-2 to Chico State and 11-1 to Cal State Monterey Bay, on Saturday in the second day of the 10th Annual Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stansilaus.

In game one, Dominican (1-25) played Chico State (18-7) close until the final inning. After Chico State lit up the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the first, Dominican responded in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman catcher Dominique Perry singled to right field and scored sophomore Molly Howard. Junior pitcher Jessi Saaty helped her cause with a double down the right field line that plated her batterymate.

In the fourth, the Wildcats appeared on the verge of inflicting damage after they loaded the bases on a wild pitch. Saaty settled down and induced a groundball that junior first baseman Kellie Hislop took herself for the putout.

Dominican had a chance to score in the sixth after Perry walked and was replacd by senior pinch runner Leighia Fleming.  Saaty doubled to left field and Fleming raced home but the relay to home plate beat her. Senior third baseman Robyn Ridpath drew a walk to get runners on the corners but both she and Saaty were stranded.

A sloppy four-error seventh inning led to four unearned Chico State runs and Dominican was put down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the seventh to finish the game.

Freshmen Crystal Albert and Rachel Santiago accounted for Dominican's two hits against Cal State Monterey Bay. Albert also drew the team's only walk and scored Dominican's lone run of the game.

The Lady Penguins will face Central Washington at 10:15 on Sunday, April 3, the final day of the Tournament of Champions. If the Lady Penguins win they'll play again at 12:45 with the opponent to be determined.
