SANTA ROSA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team struggled on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader to visiting Humboldt State University by the scores of 11-0 (5) and 12-3 (5). Dominican hosted the games, which were held at Santa Rosa Junior College.
In game one, the Jacks (2-0) built an early lead thanks to a run on two hits in the first and three runs on four hits in the second. A Dominican (0-7) error in the third opened the door for Humboldt State to add two more runs. A wild pitch in the fourth, followed by an error, a hit, and another error led to three more runs. Another error led to two more unearned runs for the Jacks in the fifth.
Game two got off to just as shaky a start for Dominican, with a two-out error allowing the Jacks to get a run on the board. After adding a run in the second, Humboldt State exploded for six runs in the top of the third, thanks in large part to two Lady Penguin errors in the inning.
Crystal Albert opened the bottom of the inning with a base hit and
Rachel Santiago drew a walk and
Emily Hanson drove them both home with a single up the middle. The Jacks put it out of reach in the top of the fifth with four more runs on four hits. In the bottom half of the inning, Albert doubled to right center to drive home pinch runner
Leighia Fleming but the Lady Penguins wouldn't get any closer.
Pitcher
Jessi Saaty took the loss in the first game, going four innings and gave up five earned runs. In game two,
Kellie Hislop pitched four and two thirds innings, giving up seven earned.
Emillie Feenan got the lone batter she faced to line out to third.
It was a tough day for Dominican in the field, committing seven errors in just 10 innings.
The Lady Penguins head to Turlock again on Feb. 16 with a doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
