TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday during the final day of the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The Lady Penguins dropped an 11-1 decision in five innings to Cal State Stanislaus and saw a comeback effort fall short in an 8-7 loss to San Francisco State.

The Lady Penguins (0-5) ran into an offensive explosion by Cal State Stanislaus (2-3). The Warriors struck for three runs in the first, followed by one in the second and two more in the third. They put things out of reach in the fourth with five runs. Dominican scored its lone run in the fifth inning when junior Jill Rizo singled home senior Robyn Ridpath, who reached on an error.

Dominican showed hopes of breaking out against San Francisco State (2-3) but saw a late-inning rally dashed. The Lady Penguins struck first when Emily Hanson drove home a pair of runs in the first inning. A single and steal by sophomore Kylie Herrada, followed by a Dominican error allowed the Gators to tie things up in the bottom of the inning. The Gators added five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-2 lead. A four-run fourth inning kept Dominican in the game, 7-6, but another Dominican error allowed pinch runner Kendra Wood to score from third. Junior Kellie Hislop opened up the seventh inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hason singled again, followed by a Kayleigh Klingberg single to score Hislop. However, Wood would get out of it and sent the final three Lady Penguins back to the dugout.

On the day, Hanson went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a walk. Sophomore Molly Howard went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Hislop went 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI.

The Lady Penguins face Humboldt State on Wednesday, Feb. 9. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m. and will be played at Santa Rosa Junior College.
