Larson Does It Again In Penguins Victory over AAU

Killian Larson's 22 points led all players in Wednesday's 73-64 victory over AAU.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team rode sophomore center Killian Larson to a 73-64 Pacific West Conference victory over Academy of Art University at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco on Wednesday night.

A Mark Lewis steal and fast break layup started things going for Dominican (2-17/2-7). The Penguins quickly built a 17-6 lead and extended the deficit to as much as 18 before halftime. The Urban Knights (5-14/2-7) used a 6-0 run to chip the lead to as little as 10 before Dominican grew the lead back to 17, just to see it knocked back down to 12, 39-27, going into halftime.

With Dominican's lead cut to five, freshman center Connor Haysbert poured in four straight points and junior guard Xander McNally added a bucket to extend the lead back to 11. The Urban Knights cut the lead back to six but Larson reentered the game and scored four points, followed by a reverse layup by freshman forward James McKinnon to temper the AAU run. The Urban Knights cut the lead to eight but Larson made two free throws and an Xavier Muldrow layup off a McKinnon steal kept the lead at 12. A William Overton, Jr. three-pointer cut it back to nine but the two teams exchanged free throws the rest of the way.

Larson, who was named to the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for the fourth straight week on Monday, led all players with 22 points, 13 of which came in the first half, and snatched seven rebounds. Senior forward Leon Hart added 11 points and led all players with eight rebounds, tying a career-high. Muldrow went 2-of-2 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line to score a season-high nine points. McKinnon and Haysbert chipped in eight points apiece and Haysbert grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. McNally led all players with a season-high 10 assists.

Overton, Jr. led the Urban Knights with 21 points. Junior center Hunter Hayden added 10 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Jonathan Burnett chipped in eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Penguins return home to the Conlan Center on Saturday, Feb. 5 and look to make it two straight when they host Notre Dame de Namur University.
