SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California Lady Penguins played excellent defense in a Pacific West Conference victory over Chaminade University, 70-56, on Saturday evening at the Conlan Center. Sophomore guard
Stephanie Carnes scored a career-high 15 points on five three-pointers and shared the game-high in points with senior center
Raquel Gomes.
Defense was a recurring theme in the first half for the Lady Penguins (7-17/5-9). Dominican stole the ball away from the Silverswords (1-18/1-11) 12 times. Senior forward
Shawna Bryant led the Lady Penguins in with four first-half steals and finished with five.
Carnes already had a career-high by halftime, with three three-point baskets. Senior guard
Kelsey Janusch, Gomes, and Carnes all had nine points at the break. To close the first half, freshman forward
Mary Kate Jankowski missed two layups, but made her third attempt, which helped send the Lady Penguins into the locker room with a 38-25 lead.
In the second half, the defense continued to shine. The Silverswords shot just .379 from the floor on the half. The Lady Penguin defense forced 14 turnovers in the second half and forced a season-high 35 turnovers on the night.
Chaminade was led by freshman guard Jordan Ahakuelo's 15 points. Freshman forward Markeshia Manning and junior forward Natasha Kealoha shared the Silversword lead in rebounds with six apiece.
In addition to sharing the team lead in scoring, Gomes led the Lady Penguins with seven rebounds.
The Lady Penguins close their home schedule on Friday, Feb. 25 against Academy of Art University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Conlan Center. Prior to the game,

Shelly Clermenco, along with Bryant, Gomes, and Janusch, will be recognized for their contributions to the Dominican women's basketball program throughout their careers.
