Box Score ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team suffered a 66-62 matinee loss versus Chestnut Hill College on Saturday in the second day of Disney's Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The game was close throughout. The Penguins' (0-2)
Ryan McIntosh made the game's first bucket but the lead exchanged hands before Mark Dirugeris Jr. nailed back-to-back three pointers to put the Griffins (1-1) ahead 12-6.
Ricky Wofford chipped the lead away with five straight points and the Penguins were back ahead at 15-14. Chestnut Hill surged ahead by four again before consecutive buckets by
Jammall Clark sent Dominican the 34-30 going into halftime.
The Griffins quickly tied it up to begin the second half and the lead exchanged hands until the 5:22 mark when Chestnut Hill went up 57-55 on a layup from Brandon Williams. Dominican pulled to within a point twice in the final minutes and was never down by more than five but breaks didn't go Dominican's way. Chestnut Hill's last nine points came off of free throws. In that same stretch, Dominican missed four of its five free throw attempts.
The Penguins were dominant on the boards and pulled down 48, including 17 on the offensive end, compared to the 34 that Chestnut Hill grabbed but it was free throws that were the glaring statistical category in Saturday's loss. The Penguins sent Chestnut Hill to the foul line 34 teams and the Griffins made 24 of those attempts. Meanwhile the Penguins struggled from the charity stripe and made just six of their 14 attempts.
"We had our opportunities today," said Dominican Head Coach
Booker T. Harris. "We need to limit our turnovers and the free throws that we allow, and make the free throws that we take."
The Griffins were led by Dirugeris' 14 points. Preseason All-American Dan Comas led Chestnut Hill from the free throw line and went 7-for-10. He finished with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Wofford led Dominican with 11 points off of the bench, including 4-of-4 from the free throw line. McIntosh added 10 points and Clark and
Jacob Noisat each added eight points. Guard
Myles Carrillo pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and Noisat pulled down eight.
