Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. —
Kayla Valentine scored a team-high 15 points and
Melissa Wise missed only two shots in contributing a season-high 13 points but the Dominican University of California women's basketball team was victimized by a Cal State Stanislaus rally in the second half of a 67-57 non-conference loss on Saturday.
“It was a reminder of how young we are,” said Dominican Head Coach
Brianna Chambers. “We just need to continue to work on getting better.”
Redshirt freshman
Lauren Hyatt and
Jasmine Green teamed for 13 rebounds for the Lady Penguins (1-5). The Warriors (2-1) were led by the 1-2 punch of senior Theresa Henderson, who had a game-high 21 points on 10-of-20 shooting, and sophomore Erin Godde, who had a game-best 14 of Cal State Stanislaus' 33 rebounds.
The Lady Penguins, trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, battled back in the second half to take the lead. Free throws by Green and a layup by Hyatt tied the game, then freshman
Ariana Flynn netted a 3-pointer to give Dominican a 46-43 advantage with 13:54 left in the game.
However, the Warriors responded with a 13-2 run to go ahead 56-48 with 8:13 remaining and the Dominican, though it shot a better shooting percentage from the floor in the game, couldn't recover from that.
In the first half, the Lady Penguins started fast and built a two-point lead, 17-15, on a jumper by Valentine with 10:29 left before intermission. But then the host Warriors went on a 19-6 to create an 11-point cushion.
Dominican closed the first half to pull within seven, 37-30. Wise didn't miss a shot and scored nine points along with teammate
Kimi Nakamura. Hyatt had four rebounds.
The Lady Penguins are off until Saturday, December 10 when they host NAIA Division II Cal Maritime Academy at 7:00 p.m. in the Conlan Center
