BOX SCORE
SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team fell in three straight sets, 16-25, 13-25, 19-25, to Academy of Art University in Pacific West Conference play at Kezar Pavilion on Friday evening.
Dominican (0-16/0-7) got the match started with a kill from
Jessica Jones but fell behind shortly after and never saw the lead again in set one. A kill and an ace by junior
Ashlee Sand kept Dominican close at 9-8 but the Urban Knights (7-13/3-6) used a 16-8 run to take the first set.
In set two, the Lady Penguins committed 11 attack errors while recording just eight kills.
In the third set,
Kelsey Lardner started things off with a service ace and the set stayed close at 14-11 on a kill from
Seluia "Ria" Falealili. The Urban Knights responded with four straight points but Dominican played point-for-point until AAU rattled off a 3-0 run and recorded the last two points of the night to take the set.
AAU's Leinani Keanini led all players with 11 of her team's 37 kills.
Lardner led Dominican with 20 assists and 11 digs. Falealili,
Cayla Morphew, and
Samantha Rains all recorded five kills apiece. Sand added four kills and Rains made two solo blocks.
"Lardner played well and both of our middles [Rains and Sand] had good nights," said Dominican Head Coach
Gayle Stammer. "That's where we were scoring most of our points."
The Lady Penguins are right back at it on Saturday with a home match against another PacWest and Bay Area rival, Notre Dame de Namur University. First serve is at 7:00 p.m. at the Conlan Center. The game will be broadcast live online with audio at
